The Ministry of Health said it will continue to work with professional associations as the 24th annual conference of the Ethiopian Society Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) opened with the theme ‘From MDGs to SDGs: Reinvigorating the Role of ESOG’ here yesterday.
Opening the conference, Health State Minister Dr. Kebede Worku said that the Ministry is keen to work with associations such as ESOG in line with the newly developed health sector transformation plan in agreement with the Sustainable Development Goals( SDGs).
“With substantial support from local and international partners as well as public participation, Ethiopia could become one of the few African countries that achieved under-five mortality by two-thirds and is reducing maternal mortality rate by 73 percent as compared to 1990,”the State Minister said.
Dr. Kebede said that the SDGs which is under implementation should go further than the MDGs to address the root causes of poverty and the universal need for development.
Society President Dr. Dereje Negusie said that various activities has been carried out regionally to end preventable maternal and child deaths since last year.
“This year’s annual conference includes the implementation of the SDGs along with post MDGs unfinished goals,” he said.
